Compositore statunitense. Dopo un esordio come clarinettista, si è perfezionato con R. Sessions e D. Del Tredici in composizione, materia che ha poi insegnato al conservatorio di San Francisco nel 1971-81. Nel 1982 ha ottenuto il premio «Guggenheim». È uno degli esponenti più in vista degli ultimi sviluppi della corrente «minimalista» ispirata ai modelli di Philip Glass e caratterizzata dalla riduzione del discorso musicale alle sue strutture elementari, dalla ripetizione di moduli in continua trasformazione e da un ostentato eclettismo stilistico (American Standard, 1973; Gran Pianola Music per 2 soprani, 2 pianoforti e piccola orchestra, 1980; inoltre, Shaker Loops per 7 archi, 1978; Common tones in simple time, 1979, Tromba lontana, 1986, e Fearful symmetries, 1988, per orchestra).
