Amin Maalouf likes to give Western readers fresh perspectives on the Arab and Islamic culture and history. This wonderful book is no exception. He has used the extraordinary life of an extraordinary man: fifteen century's Muslim converted to Catholicism under the patronage of nobody less than the Pope. Leo was born Hassan - the Arab word for lion - in Cordoba while the Muslim empire was in retreat. He fled the Reconquista and found shelter in Morocco, where he reinvented himself as an ambassador and an explorer, before being captured and taken to Rome, where he was made gift to the Pope, who baptized him. Maalouf uses the limited information we possess of Hassan to build up an enjoyable historic novel that paints a surprising picture of the fifteenth century. Telling the potential readers how the Egyptian caliphate, the Ottoman sultanate, the protagonists of Italian Renaissance and Martin Luther fit into the frame would waste the novel. It will suffice to say that Amin Maalouf and Leo the African take the reader with them in a whirlwind.
